Why Aren't My YouTube Chapters Showing Up?
You pasted a list of timestamps into your description, hit save, and... no chapter bar. No clickable sections under the video. This happens to almost every creator at least once, and it's almost never random — YouTube checks your timestamps against a short list of rules, and if any one of them fails, it just shows a plain description instead of chapters, with no error message. Here's every real cause, in the order to check them.
1. Your first timestamp isn't exactly 00:00
This is the single most common cause. YouTube requires the very first chapter to start at00:00 — not 00:05, not 00:12. If your video opens with a few seconds of a logo or intro animation before the "real" first chapter, that's fine — just label that first chapter something like 0:00 Intro instead of skipping it.

2. You have fewer than 3 timestamps
YouTube needs at least 3 chapters to build a chapter bar. Two timestamps, however correctly formatted, will never turn into chapters — YouTube will just leave your description as plain text.
3. Your timestamps aren't in ascending order
Every timestamp must come after the one before it. This usually happens by accident — a chapter gets added or reordered late while editing the description, and one line ends up out of sequence. Even a single out-of-order line breaks the whole list.
4. A chapter is shorter than 10 seconds
YouTube requires every chapter to last at least 10 seconds. If two of your timestamps are only a few seconds apart — for example a quick sponsor mention squeezed between two other chapters — that chapter is too short and YouTube will reject the whole list, not just that one chapter.
5. Formatting YouTube can't parse
YouTube is fairly flexible about format — 1:30, 01:30, [1:30], and 1:30 - Title all work — but it does need to recognize each line as "time, then text" (or the reverse). Extra characters jammed right against the numbers, or a timestamp buried in the middle of a sentence instead of at the start of its own line, can stop a line from being read as a chapter at all. Keep one timestamp per line.
6. You added timestamps somewhere other than the video description
Chapters are only read from the video's own description box. Timestamps in a pinned comment, a community post, or the video title won't create chapters, no matter how correctly they're formatted.
7. Give it a few minutes
If everything above checks out and chapters still aren't showing, YouTube can take a short while to reprocess a description after you save it — this is especially common right after upload. Refresh the page after a few minutes before assuming something is wrong.
